Over the last several months, from many different sources I have been asked if I would write an eBook on using energy for healing purposes. Well I think this will make an excellent summer project so I will do just that. Many years ago I had the privilege of working for about 5 years with a Korean Chi Master and so I will share that knowledge with everyone in this upcoming eBook.

I have been involved in Kyusho for about 9 years now. I started at a Dillman seminar hosted by Grand Master Steve Stewart. I have to admit, I was hooked pretty quick. What is H.P.P.T?

It stands for Humane Pressure Point Tactics. Now I know there are literally thousands of self defense systems out there in the world, what makes this one so different? Well simply put it is the 'humane' aspect. I have looked at many of the 'reality based' self defense systems on the market, and to be perfectly honest about 90% are garbage and the other 10% while being effective are going to create problems down the road. Why? Because most of us are never going to be in a situation that is life or death and if we follow some of these system we may not be able to claim "self defense' in the court systems. It is hard to explain why you broke someone neck who was only trying to punch you!

This is were H.P.P.T comes into play. This system gives you the change to end the conflict quickly without there being a body count. However you can quickly move to a more deadly mode if needed.

Kata Bunkai - KO on ST-5

One of the many cornerstones of Pressure Point Study is the interpretation or Bunkai of the Kata or patterns practiced in the martial arts. The reason is simple, to find a purpose and to be able to visualize what is happening with a particular technique or movement.

Now there are traditional interpretations of Kata, but most of these are not pressure point related interpretation. Below I offer a video that will show an example of Kata Bunkai using the Korean ITF Hyung called Do San. Now, there are no wrong interpretations to a Kata, but there is always room for improvement. Take a look at any of the Kata you preform in your art. Can you find a pressure point application for the different moves? It does take some practice!

Below is a knockout hitting ST-5 from the Hyung or Kata Do San. The final move was changed somewhat for the safety of my Uki.

What are Pressure Point Study Groups?

What are Pressure Point Study Groups? Well each year in my home Dojo I hold a one year long Novice Study Group of my students and any other local martial artists looking to learn the art of pressure points known as Kyusho Jitsu.

The course runs one calendar year and is held once per month on a Saturday for 3 hours. If the person taking the course holds the rank of Black Belt in their root art, they are then allowed to take a 3 hour certification exam, and if successful earn their Black Belt in Kyusho as well. For under belts the process is a little different, but a similar result is gained.

So what happens to someone who is not local, and has no instructor in their area? There are several options depending on what goal is wished to be obtained. For those interested in just the knowledge their are various courses like our Online Course and our Home Study Course. But the option of in Dojo study does still exist.

The easiest way to get started is to host a seminar at your Dojo and invite as many as possible to attend. I can travel to your location a teach whatever time frame of seminar you are looking for. We can then gather interested parties and setup a Study Group held every 3 months, for the entire weekend, covering 3 months of material. Testing and promotions to Black Belt would then be like here in my home Dojo. Certification is done under Kyusho International Alliance Research - KIA.

What are setup Points?

One of my online students sent me a message the other day asking about Pericardium 6 and if it was really a good setup point. The answer is YES, but here is a little more information to help you out...

PC-6 is a great setup point. I can easily be touched during a fingerlock or any other grappling move. I will usually try to use my pericardium there. Holding this point during a strike will magnify the effects of the strike.

Experiment with PC-6 and you can see the different results for yourself. Keep track of what you are doing, then look for techniques in your style, that have become automatic that these techniques can be worked into.

Another great point is Spleen 6, which is located on just above the ankle on the inside of the foot. This point is also called Triple Yin as there are three Yin Meridians running in this location and all are affected when SP-6 is struck. This point is very popular for use my people demonstrating Knockout Techniques.

What is a Knockout?

What is a Knockout? How does it happen? Are there different kinds of knockouts? This is a re post from back in March 2010, but it is information that is always worth posting a second and even a third time. This was originally written by Master Chad Barry.

CONCUSSION

Caused by blunt trauma to the head resulting in bruising or damage to one or more areas of the brain as it collides with the inside of the skull.

This can be caused by heavy impact to the skull such as a martial arts strike, a fall, car accident, etc...

NEUROLOGICAL

Caused by a short circuit, overload, or imbalance in the central nervous system (involving both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems).

This can be using Kyusho Jitsu techniques. It may also be caused by extreme stress, emotions, shock, or extreme trauma to any area of the body (a broken or crushed limb for example). This kind of knockout can also be chemically induced (alcohol, toxins, allergies).

CARDIO/RESPIRATORY

Caused by limiting the oxygen supply to the brain.

This can be caused by choking or strangulation involving the air supply, the flow of blood or both. It can also be caused by impact to veins or arteries causing a disruption in the flow of blood, or by dislodging plaque from the arterial walls causing clots. This is one of the reasons why we tend not to do KO's on persons over the age of 40.

Other causes such as stroke, cardio vascular disease and respiratory ailments such as asthma are considered Cardio/Respiratory issues but may also be triggered Neurologically.

Correct Pressure Point Application

Back a few posts ago I showed a video from another martial art system claiming their technique employed the use of pressure points. They identified two points, but really did nothing in the technique to active the points or the meridian. To refresh your memory here is the original post.

I also in the post identified how I would map the technique from their system to truly use pressure points to get a predictable result. Below is a video I made last night demonstrating the same techniques with proper use of Pressure Point Principles.

Pressure Points are not something that can be just hit. Otherwise we would be in constant pain ourselves from bumping up against things in our enviroment. In the orginal example the attack was on HT-2 and HT-3. In the example both points are struck, however HT-3 is a rub or touch point, and the attack on HT-2 was the wrong angle and direction.

In my example above I attack LI-20, using other principles and get a knockdown. When the correct principles are employeed, the result is much different! Now I do want to mention that I do applaud this group creating these videos. They are truly trying to help out their fellow martial artists and students. However it is best, in my view to truly understand pressure points before you start to teach them.

Pressure Points are Not Hit and Miss

Pressure Points are becoming a 'buzz' word in martial arts. I know buzz word is an old term, but it seems to be true in this case. There is however a lot of misinformation out there. It is not done purposefully, just as an attempt to make people think you know something, or simply band wagon jumping. Remember Kick Boxing?

Once in a while in the morning I will surf the video world and look at what there is new in pressure point videos. Today I found an interesting one. It is posted below and I will comment on it after wards.

Now I have watched a few of these videos and they are OK. But what pressure point is this lady actually striking? The diagram he is giving after the video is Heart 2 and 3. However on his attack of the young lady it is the lung meridian that is exposed because of the position of his fist. She crosses Pericardium and Heart.

Plus, the angle and direction of the strikes are incorrect. The best result will be to strike down the arm, in the direction of the energy flow. Plus HT-3 is not a strike point. She is also very likely to hit Large Intestine, because of the rotation of the arm. The applications are just not correct for the tools being used. She may get a result, but the result will not be from pressure point activation, nor will she be able to predict a result.

Now for a better result with her 'cross slapping block' from a pressure point aspect would be to parry the strike with her right hand, slapping at the wrist, thus getting an activation on Heart, Pericardium and Lung and then move inward and hit LI-20 or another face point with her left hand. This would give her a predictable result, and activation of several meridian. She would be using the correct striking action for Heart and Pericardium as well as being able to use stance in the application.

Please understand my intention is not to bash anyone or any technique! Pressure points are a study, then a careful integration into your style of martial art. Saying or selling anything else is an injustice. From what I can see she has learned a few points, is hitting them and hoping everything will be OK. It would be much better to do the technique, hit hard, and leave the pressure point references out.

Understanding How Pressure Point Knockout Occur

Knockouts can be very frustrating for many Kyusho practitioners. This happens because they do not yet understand and apply the principles required to make these KO's happen. As I have written before there are different types of knockouts. In pressure point study we are looking at the neurological knockout, not the blunt trauma knockout. Anyone can cause a blunt trauma KO.

To get a pressure point knockout requires you understand the principles that come into play, as well as have a good knowledge of the different pressure points on the body. This is what I am looking at doing, with this new course that I am considering adding to our services. Teaching people with pressure point knowledge to do these KO's safely and effectively.

Take a look at this video, which is a simple Alarm Point activation knockout. After the video I will explain what has happened.

Now this techniques begins with a double lapel grab. Being that Hapkido is my root art, we deal with these kinds of situations often. During this type of grab the attacker and the defender are exchanging energy because of the contact. Let's look at all the things that are happening here.

First, in this grab my Uki has his hand touching my lung meridian, at LU-01 specifically. We are both standing in a small forward bo, or a fire stance. I now have fire and metal applied, the metal is because he is touching my LU-01, the fire from my stance and his.

I now strike Alarm Point ST-25, which is the Alarm Point for Large Intestine. When I strike an alarm point I activate the meridian on both sides of the body, as well as Triple Warmer on both side of the body. But because I am striking ST-25 bi-laterally, I activate the Stomach Meridian bi-laterally also.! Now you should see Fire, Medal and Earth.

Next I strike LI-10 on the arm, hitting both sides of the body. Large Intestine is already activated from the Alarm Point hit! Now I drive the energy towards me, loosening the hands and causing the knees to buckle, the head to come forward. I move up to Gall Bladder on the head for some Wood Element and then ST-05 for the KO.

What principles have I employed?

Cycle of Destruction

Attack along the Meridian

Attack using Alarm Points

Attack using the Diurnal Cycle.

Attack with tempo

Attack with correct body mechanics

See because all the above were employed the KO was easy to accomplish. I must also add INTENT to the list of reason for success. Without intent you will not be successful....ever!

This was an idea that came to me the other day. If I had a course, that taught Knockouts, how many people would be interested? The idea is relatively simple. Like the online course you sign up and pay a monthly tuition. You would receive videos and support on doing knockout as demonstrations for your students, classes etc.

Perhaps call it should be called a coaching group? It would be for people with pressure point knowledge, not beginners to the system. I would not be teaching principles, just a hit here and there using this stance etc. Same I could critique your ideas and help with problems.

Things are Different Today

Today things in the martial arts are very different. People don't train as often or as hard as they did in the days of old. Now I am not talking about the 60's and 70's, I am talking about the days when the master of old were just starting out.

The master of old knew things and did things we could only dream of, but this knowledge came from repetition. Men like Funakoshi and Oyata were men of a different era of the arts. Back in those days you would train on a single kata for years on end. With today's belt systems there are many more kata, and motivation is very different. This will cause techniques to not be fully understood.

The master of old were pressure point experts, today the majority of martial artist and instructor know little to nothing about these systems, even if they think they do. Why is this? Because they lacked the repetition to learn them from their kata and kumite.

Now today we are once again becoming fortunate in the way the arts are being taught. Masters of old have come forward and begun to teach what they know. Now as the years go by this information is being researched and refined. Thus, the dawning of the Pressure Point art of Kyusho Jitsu.

Learning something like Kyusho can be a challenge. Especially in the novice year of study there is so much information that must be memorized and understood. I can recall my first year of study very well! I had notes upon notes upon notes.

After a few years of compiling notes I sat down and rewrote everything into one book. My students refer to it as the holy book of kyusho. We joke about me leaving it in my will to the best kyusho student in the school. It is a nice book, leather bound with gold leaf paper. It contains pretty much everything I have learned plus many things I figured out for myself.

This book was were our Novice Pressure Point Workbook and our Advanced Pressure Point Wookbook came from. Both book have received rave reviews from martial artist all over the world!

But this also caused me to become interested in making learning the pressure point system much more student friendly. So we have designed some great new study aids, with more on the table coming soon!

Pressure Point Knockout on Spleen 11

Last night I did a 'pre-college' which was recorded for promotional reasons. Now to me the study of pressure points goes far beyond the idea of a simple knockout. While I have done hundreds of knockouts over time, I rarely ever use them as the focus for the study.

Last night we focused on using one of the Principle of Kyusho to become effective. That principle was the Cycle of Destruction. However at the end of the class I did a very simple knockout on leg point Spleen 11 to show power of these principles. Below is that video.

I wanted to take a moment today to write about support for Kyusho (Pressure Point) Students. Any of our products, the Home Study Course, or the Online Course come with full support to have your questioned answered. But I think I need to explain how this support works a little better.

Our support is done throught the use of EMAIL or Blackberry Messenger. You are free to email me anytime with your questions and I will do my best to answer in a timely fashion, usually with a few hours, and rarely more than 24 hours. The same goes for Blackberry Messenger.

I run 2 different Kyusho Courses at my school. This a Novice Course and an Advanced Course. Support for my in Dojo students basically works the same, or they can make an appointment to talk with me in person. I never do phone support! I simply do not have the time to do so.

I was asked recently about doing lessons on Skype, again this is a time thing as I personally never do private lessons. My typical day will begin at 6:00am and end about 10:00pm.

I hope everyone understands that each student is very important to me and I will do my very best to help you in as timely a manner as possible!

What is Advanced Study?

In Novice Pressure Point Study we spend a lot of time cover materials that many people would consider to be very dry. You need to know all the meridians, were they start, where they end, and what course they follow. You must know all the elements, the striking action for each, stances, colors, polarity and the list goes on and on. Once all this is memorized and internalized the student is ready for more.

As a good example of Novice Study we can look at my Novice Pressure Point Workbook. It contains over 100 pages of information, but very little of it is application based. So what is advanced study? Well certainly there is more theory, but application now comes into play. Taking all the theory and actually making it work! This is the meat of pressure point study, but like all martial arts it takes time to get there.

In my upcoming Advanced Pressure Point Workbook we will be focusing not only on new theory, but also application as well. This book will not be as long, but the information will be much more detailed for applying these theories in real situations.

Updates on Miky

This is the current situation with Miky in Romania. My thanks to all the generous people who have helped out with donations thus far. Here is a copy of an email I received yesterday in regard to her condition.

Hi Art;
Just spoke with Cristina on the phone. She is on her way back from Bucharest with Nelu and Oti. They had a chance to visit with Miky and a team of physicians that are keeping her alive.
It appears that the culprit is a very severe case of bacterial infection (sepsis infection) of the blood. They are administering her a drug (xigris). I've googled it and pretty much falls in line with her status as described by the physicians, in other words, it is administered to patients with severe case ofsepsis, in life or death situations. Miky's condition apparently outweighs the severe side affects of the drug as I understand.
She is in an induced coma, six of her organs have been desumated by the bacteria and she is on life support. The doctors give her a 2% chance for survival, and she could pass away today, tomorrow or maybe weeks. Right now this drug is holding it's ground I think, and life support took over all her vital functions. The doctors are testing her blood for improvement. Apparently the doctors do not have an answer as to what caused the sepsis infection. Unfortunately, I have been unable to travel with them to see Miky.

It is a very sad situation Art, but at this point I am not sure how we can help. Apparently this hospital is top ranked in this department and have the resources for intervening in the worst cases such as Miky's.

Lets all pray for her subconscious fighting it while the sepsis infection goes away, blood and organ treatment refined and recovery begins.

Hello Everyone,

If you look to the right of this article you will find a donation button to help a good friend of mine in Romania with medical expenses. I met this lady about 6 months ago and she helped me to travel to her country to introduce the art of Kyusho Jitsu to martial artists there.

Approximately one week ago from the date of this article she took ill with a serious liver condition. Her life is currently in danger, however the situation is improving. I arranged on Wednesday of this week for a helicopter airlift to Bucharest to save her life. Without this she had no chance for survival. However the problems still exist. The medical system in Romania is very poor and very expense. The economy in the country is in ruins.

Currently I am fund raising and taking donation to help the family with these expenses. Any and all donations are welcome and ALL the money is sent directly to the family. I have some very good news for all my Spanish speaking friends, not only is our Pressure Point Workbook being translated into Spanish, and will be available in a few days, but we are also having our Kyusho Jitsu Canada website done as well!

This is great news for many people! I am also in the works of having all the video's subtitled into Spanish so more people can enjoy the benefits. All of this will take some time, but the time will be well worth it!

Now, as for seminars. Currently I am working with a group in Romania, and will in the future look at having the workbook translated for them as well. However right now when it comes to seminars we can do these with a translator interpreter as well!

What is Bunkai?

Bunkai is a term that pretty much every martial artist has heard, but may not actually know or understand what it's meaning is. As defined by Wikipedia it is as follows.

Bunkai (分解^?), literally meaning "analysis"^[1] or "dis assembly"^[2], is a term used in Japanese martial arts referring to the application of fighting techniques extracted from the moves of a "form" (kata).

The masters of old always referred to the Kata as the most important aspect of the arts. The student needed to understand this kata, and thus it was repeated for years on end. Today things are very different and often times this kata is rarely if ever disassembled and studied. If it is, it is often times on a very superficial level.

The the pressure point art of Kyusho Jitsu this is just the opposite. When I teach this art great importance is once again placed on Kata, and the meanings of each move. Each move can and will also have different interpretation, and this interpretation is based on the attack. How to Learn More about Pressure Points

There are many different ways you could go about learning more about the pressure point arts. You can purchase a book, to get you started or look at the Home Study Course and Online Course options as well. A book is very difficult, but is the cheapest of the options. The other are a little more expense, but these will also get the job done. What is the ultimate method of learning? Starting a study group!

In the fall of each year at my school I teach a Novice Kyusho Certification Course, in which 12 students learn for 3 hours at a time on a monthly basis what they need to know to get started in Kyusho and attain a Black Belt. Now I know what you are thinking because you don't live in this town, so can you do?

The answer is simple! Host a Kyusho Jitsu / Pressure Points Seminar at your school and see if there is enough interest to start a study group in your area! Now things would run a little different if you do this than they do here, but the results are the same. I want to be a Black Belt in Kyusho, but how?

Since I first starting writing articles on Kyusho on my first Kyusho website several years ago I am often asked as to how someone can obtain a Black Belt in the art. So today I will explain what is necessary to achieve this, but not from the local perspective, but for those of you who are far away from a qualified instructor. (Students using the home study or online study please email me for information on this topic).

When I teach a Novice Certification Course here in my home town it is a one year endeavor. Students come once per month for 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon. They learn the theory and very importantly the practical application of this theory. After one year there is a 3 hour examination. 1 1/2 hour written and 1 1/2 practical. They are then awarded a probationary Black Belt which I will typically convert to 1st Dan after 6 months at no additional cost to the student.

As for distance learning it would work somewhat differently, but the approximate time frame of one year would still apply. Here is an example. Next week I am travelling to Romania to do a few seminars. When I am finished I am hoping to have some 10-20 people interesting in pursuing pressure point study to an advanced level. Once the group has been assembled I would travel back every 3-4 months and do a full weekend of classes, which would cover 3-4 months of materials. When I return months later this would be reviewed and new materials added in the same way. After one year, or approximately 4 weekend long sessions the students would be tested for their rank in Kyusho Jitsu. I do the testing under the umbrella or Kyusho International Alliance.

Pressure Points and Intention

Intention - an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.

How does this apply to the study of pressure points? Well without intention and then seeing the result you are wanting, you will fail! However this is not bad news, because without intention, you will simply fail at just about any task.

Visualizing and seeing the result in pressure point study is very important. Just like with any martial art study the success it brings breeds confidence, and confidence is required in all aspects of life, and martial arts is not exception.

When you first start working with pressure points use an Uki who will cooperate as you are learning. Later as your confidence grows start working with more difficult partners. Like any technique or application, pressure points require skill to apply. Now I can hear the Nay Sayers, this means that pressure points are fine motor skills and therefore cannot be applied in a stressful situation. Well for them this is true, first they have no intention to leanr! But also any fine motor skill when practice enough times becomes a gross motor skill. Look at tying your shoes. That is a fine motor skill, which has become a gross motor skill.

Now if you are one of these people who are looking for a quick fix martial art. Then pressure point study is not for you. However if you see the value in traditional martial arts and wish to enhance this even further, then pressure points are something you might wish to look into further.

Remember practice with intent! You will see a big difference in your results.

Kata Interpretation Bunkai

Better with age

When I first started to study martial arts many, many years ago, the older master were always the most devastating and dangerous. They moved with great ease and never had any trouble with any uki or opponent. Today the face of the arts is different.

Now when I say different, this does not mean bad, just different. Now that competitions like WFT TKD and UFC along with other MMA competitions martial arts looks like something for the young and strong only. And to be honest, in those arenas this is very true. But we have forgotten an important part of the linage. The martial artist should become better with age.

Now how is this all possible? With knowledge and understanding of the arts themselves. There are no superior martial art styles, only great students of the arts. How do you make an art timely, learn the things that the great masters and grand masters understood. That is simply, the pressure point system of the human body.

Pressure Point knowledge can be applied to any art, without changing the movements or style of the art itself. How is this possible, the answer is simply, because the information is already there, but it lies dormant.
